Simona's Blindfolded Test

Indycar rookie Simona de Silvestro does the draw-the-track-while-blindfolded thing at Barber Motorsports Park and does it amazingly well.

Swiss precision, or did she peek? I don't know but I enjoyed her thoughts on the circuit as she drew it and I'd rather watch her doing this than Nico Rosberg (who did similar at each Formula 1 venue last season) even if Nico does have nicer hair.

Yes, a fantastic job of drawing, particularly for two comsecutive laps. I rarely make association between actual track maps and driving, and I'm always surprised when I review maps of tracks I know well, particularly about turns exceeding 180 degrees of arc. If I had to communicate with others about the vehicle and track, it would be a necessity. As I tend to learn tracks without using maps, it does probably take a bit longer to discover faster lines through series of turns.

I really like BMP. I drove it in rFactor after Keith mentioned friends driving there, and it's a favorite. Simona's comments all ring true.

I remembered you recommending BMP and I installed the track in rFactor last week with the intention of learning it before the weekend's races. I drove a couple of wobbly laps but never found a good block of time to really work on it. But I picked up the sequence reasonably well watching the Grand-Am enduro and the IRL races Saturday and Sunday and I intend to get back to it in rFactor.

It looks like fun, a really busy lap too, and that's one that I could conceivably drive in real life some day. It's about an 8-hour drive from here, more or less like going to Watkins Glen, not an every-weekend thing but doable on occasion.

There were a number of comments during the race about how quick and perceptive Simona is, about how well she works with her engineer and the quality of her feedback from the car. She drove a fine race for 88 of 90 laps, but didn't close the deal and unfortunately missed out on possibly cracking the top 10. Nonetheless she's one to watch.

Regarding real-world lapping of BMP, it's got some truly spooky high-speed features - the 9/10 kink would be pretty scary.
