Billboard on West Market Street

I noticed this billboard a couple of weeks back, across from the 1910 Frame Factory and Meineke Mufflers, and remembered to stop and grab a snap of it today. Notice the name there? "William E. Gramley"

As it happens, I stopped at his booth at a downtown street festival--Fun Fourth maybe--many years ago and talked to him about his art, and yes he is the father of the Gramley sisters who worked at Jung's.

Here's a link to his image in the "Art in the Air" campaign, with no additional info. Here's a two-page gallery of some of his other work. And here's a one-paragraph bio that accompanied an exhibition in 2002 that included him, stating:

After 35 years as a minister in the Moravian Church, Bill Gramley returned to his love of drawing. He started working with pastels in 1992, and his work with landscapes and still lifes has evolved with great skill. He is an exhibiting member of Associated Artists of Winston-Salem. He has shown at Wilkes Art Gallery in North Wilkesboro, NC, Wake Forest University, Davidson County Community College, Caswell County Civic Center in Yanceyville, Boykin Cultural Center in Wilson, Wayne County Arts Council in Goldsboro, NC, and the Museum of York County in Rock Hill, SC. He's won numerous prizes in juried shows and teaches pastel art classes.

What, no mention of his love for Sunbeam Minxes?

I find it quite significant that he has expunged all references and connections to them from his bio.
