iPhones and iPod touches have accelerometers to detect their screen orientation. Many applications take advantage of this as game controllers and other novelty programs, but these two programs make a great use of this built-in hardware, they work as automobile performance meters, like the G-Tech.

You do need to have a $200-$500 iPhone or iPod touch, of course, but if you already own one (we've got an iPod touch), it's an inexpensive way to do accelerometer-based performance testing.
